Grassland Conservation Project
Grasslands

The grasslands of KwaZulu-Natal are in serious danger. Threatened by excessive afforestation for the paper industry and by farming, housing schemes and insensitive development, our grassland biodiversity is declining.

Grassland diversityThe Grassland Conservation Project is an attempt to provide a safe refuge for grassland plants that are threatened by habitat destruction.

The full horticultural and medicinal potential of many of our plants remain to be researched.

To enable all South Africans to benefit from our exceptionally diverse grasslands, we are conserving and promoting grassland plants.

The Grassland Project has two parts - a small grassland bed in the middle of the Historical Collections, and the more extensive Midlands Meadow on the hillside.
