Muthi (Medicinal Plant) Garden
labelled plants in muthi garden

The traditional healers of South Africa, particularly those from the Zulu culture, use many indigenous plants for medicine. Over 1000 different species are on record as having a use.

Many of these plants are becoming threatened because of over-harvesting from their wild populations. This exciting project aims to broaden public awareness of the importance and uses of medicinal plants, and to highlight the over-harvesting problem and the complex social issues surrounding it.

We offer courses for those who wish to grow medicinal plants, which alleviates pressure on the wild populations.

In the Muthi garden you will find a traditional Zulu hut, surrounded with plants which have medicinal uses within the Zulu culture. Inside the hut is information and interesting facts about the medicinal plant industry.
