Karoo Desert NBG
Geographic Beds

The miniature rockery just in front of the main administrative office represents plants of the various phytogeographic areas (plant geographic areas) of the Karoo.

Here, the visitor will be introduced to such far away places as the Richtersveld, Botterkloof Karoo, Knersvlakte, Ceres Karoo, and others. There are over a 1000 plant species concentrated in a small area of 1225 sq. metres.

This area is at its best during the autumn, winter and spring. Look for the Welwitschia mirabilis - this unusual plant comes from the Namib desert in Namibia.
