In support of its mission, the NBI has as one its strategic objectives to be the primary source of information on southern Africa's indigenous plants, and to disseminate this knowledge to the public. It has two large botanical libraries, the Mary Gunn Library in Pretoria and the Harry Molteno Library at Kirstenbosch in Cape Town. They are both open to the public.
